The LEND Program at CCHMC/UC incorporates active learning and team learning to optimize leadership development. Here are some examples of the learning opportunities we provide for LEND trainees:

Disabilities Policy Team Learning Assignment: trainees work in teams to explore selected areas of disability policy and report back to the large group, with input from faculty and policy experts.

Values in Disabilities LEND Summer Reading Assignment: each LEND trainee reads one assigned book over the summer, guided by discussion questions, and participates in an early September LEND Book Club Discussion Session.

Observations Across Disciplines Description and Assignment: LEND trainees observe assessments and evaluations carried out by disciplines other than their own (in person, via live streaming video, through a one-way mirror, or on posted video) and submit written reflections.

LEND Disciplinary Presentations Project: LEND trainees work in disciplinary teams to make a structured presentation about their own discipline in order to inform trainees from other disciplines about their training, credentialing, and work with and on behalf of children with disabilities and their families.

Life Course Theory and Social Determinants of Health Discussion Board Assignment: In preparation for their first LEND session on Life Course Theory and Social Determinants of Health, LEND trainees read background material and then post their thoughts on how these constructs apply to their work with and on behalf of children with disabilities and their families.

Family Mentoring Project LEND Trainee Manual: Pairs of LEND trainees are matched to families with children with disabilities to learn from the family their experience of disability. Trainees reflect on this experience through written assignments. Readings and classroom presentations/ panel discussions help trainees to build knowledge and skills for family-centered practice.
